Going Fast
I've been curious about fasting for a long time. It's only been fairly recently in my life that I've actually known people, real people, who fasted for spiritual reasons.
I have one friend who would tell me he was fasting, and when I asked why, he said, "For diet and spiritual reasons."
This somehow just didn't sit right with me. I was thinking, if you're going to diet, then diet. If you're going to fast for God, then that should be the only reason you do it.
As I became more and more immersed in my spiritual journey, I also became more and more aware of the fact that by not knowing about fasting, I was missing something significant.
I wanted to know more.
Eventually, I asked my friend Mike, who is also a spiritual mentor, about fasting. He shared a number of things with me about fasting, including the fact that his church calls a fast on the first day of every month. When I asked him more about it, he lent me a book, "Fasting," by Jentezen Franklin.
I am now about halfway through that book, and have found about fasting more than I ever suspected existed. I have determined that this is something I need to do, both as a discipline for myself, to channel my focus where it needs to go, and to help open up a better channel of communication so I can hear the Holy Spirit more clearly.
Even though as I write this, I'm only halfway through that book, I recommend it highly. You can see it on Amazon here:
I'll come back more once I have learned more about fasting. If you are interested in taking the next step in your own spiritual journey, in taking the next step in your own personal relationship with God, then you should probably read this book. I'm not saying you should fast. That's totally your decision. But reading this book will shine a light into some heretofore dark areas of your knowledge, of your spiritual education.
I'd also be interested in hearing your thoughts and comments.
